LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to FGCU in its Atlantic Sun Conference opener, but the Knights regrouped for a 7-0 win over Oakland City on Wednesday at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex.
Against FGCU (3-4, 1-0 ASUN), all three doubles matches were tied at 5-5 before 7-5 final scores. Sophomore
Vendula Kryslova and junior
Ekaterina Tikhonko defeated Fanny Norin and Ida Ferding 7-5 at No. 1, and freshmen
Nikola Kollaritsch and
Erica Kanna Hagi topped Jordana Ossa and Paloma Goldsmith 7-5 at No. 2 as Bellarmine (7-8, 0-1) secured the point.
Even though every singles match was won in straight sets, the contests were tight, as four of the six required a tiebreaker to decide a set. Kryslova beat Goldsmith 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3 and Kollaritsch downed Amelia Kopel 6-1, 7-5 at No. 6 for the Knights.
Bellarmine rolled against Oakland City. Winning in straight sets from Nos. 1-6 were Tikhonko, Kryslova, junior
Yeva Kramarova, Kollaritsch, freshman
Lillie Willis and sophomore
Shu Grosso.
The Knights swept doubles play by a combined score of 18-3 behind Kryslova/Tikhonko, Kramarova/Kollaritsch and Willis/Grosso.
Bellarmine will play Saturday and Sunday at host North Dakota. The Knights will face Marquette in a neutral-site match at 12:30 p.m. (ET) Saturday and the Fighting Hawks at 11:15 a.m. Sunday.
