Softball drops another close contest on Saturday afternoon

KENNESAW, Ga. – After a hard-fought loss last night, the Bellarmine University softball team dropped its second consecutive game to Kennesaw State 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Bailey Park.

With the loss, the Knights move to 13-23 this season, 5-9 in Atlantic Sun Conference play. With the win, the Owls improve to 13-29 overall, 4-10 in the ASUN.

Once again, freshman Brooke Shewmaker got the game started with a leadoff hit, this time a double down the left field line. Shewmaker advanced to third on a ground out in the following at-bat but would go no further.

Bellarmine righty Carson Goatley was very efficient to start the game, surrendering just two hits through the first three innings of the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kennesaw State broke the stalemate. The Owls got the frame going with a leadoff double, advancing the runner in the following at-bat with a sacrifice bunt before finally bringing the run home on a sky-high fly ball that dropped between Bellarmine defenders just beyond the infield dirt for an RBI double and a 1-0 lead.

Kennesaw State struck again in the fifth after a leadoff walk got a runner on. In similar fashion, another high fly ball, this time in left center field, dropped between Bellarmine defenders for an RBI double and a 2-0 lead.

Junior Kayla Bauer got the top of the sixth going for the Knights with a missile into the left field corner, racing around the bases for a leadoff triple. Kennesaw State was able to work around the hit though, stranding Bauer on third base.

The Owls added one final insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. A two out walk kept the inning going for Kennesaw State before tacking on a third run courtesy of yet another RBI double to go up 3-0.

Junior Megan Konermann attempted to start a Knights rally in the top of the seventh, lining a leadoff single through the middle but Bellarmine would not get another hit, falling 3-0.

The third and final game of the series between the Knights and Owls will come tomorrow, April 14. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET at Bailey Park.
