LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University softball team returned home to host Atlantic Sun foe Eastern Kentucky University on Friday night, falling 7-3 to the Colonels in game one of the series at Knights Field.
With the loss, the Knights drop to 13-25 on the year, 5-11 in ASUN action. The win improves EKU's record to 34-5 in 2024, 15-1 in conference play.
The Colonels jumped out front early, striking for a run in the game's opening frame.
EKU added two more runs in the third thanks to a pair of RBI singles before busting the game open with a three run fifth inning to extend its lead to 6-0.
Bellarmine finally got on the board in the home half of the fifth. After a quick first out, grad student
Olivia Bricker got the inning going with a walk. In the following at-bat, sophomore
Madison Davis ripped a double to the fence in left center field, putting two runners in scoring position. Junior
Kayla Bauer immediately followed with a fly ball deep to center field, scoring Bricker from third with the sacrifice fly to cut the lead down to five at 6-1.
Eastern Kentucky University responded in the top of the sixth, adding on a final insurance run to push the lead back to six, now up 7-1.
In their final at-bat of the game, the Knights rallied. Freshman
Nicole Waters kicked the bottom of the seventh off with a leadoff single down, advancing to second on an errant throw by EKU's third baseman. Bricker followed with her second walk of the game before Davis came up with another clutch hit, this time an RBI single up the middle to score Waters. After a pitching change, Davis swiped second base before a second Colonels' throwing error allowed Bauer to reach first and advance to second while also scoring Bricker to put the Knights within striking distance at 7-3. The rally would end there though as the Colonels worked out of the jam.
Bellarmine and EKU will play game two of the three game series tomorrow, April 20. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
