HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – The Bellarmine University softball team could not muster any offense in its final midweek game of the season, falling 3-0 to Northern Kentucky University on Wednesday afternoon.
With the loss, the Knights drop to 13-28 on the year while the win vaults the Norse to 19-17 this season.
The game was deadlocked at 0-0 for the first two innings as neither team could get much going at the plate.
NKU finally found a spark in the bottom of the third inning, putting up two runs on two hits while taking advantage of a Bellarmine defensive error to go up 2-0.
Bellarmine got a base runner on in each of the fourth and fifth innings but were unable to bring a run home. The Knights had their best chance at scoring in the top of the sixth, as junior
Harlie Bickett led the inning off with a single before fellow juniors
Megan Konermann and
Mackayla Denney reached base via error to load the bases with one out, but Bellarmine was once again unable to strike for a run.
Northern Kentucky added another run in the home half of the six thanks to a sacrifice fly, extending its lead to 3-0 before shutting Bellarmine down in order in the seventh to secure the win.
Bickett led the way for Bellarmine at the plate, recording two of the team's four hits.
Up next, the Knights return home for their final home games of the season as they host University of North Alabama for a three-game Atlantic Sun Conference series April 27-28.
