Softball comes out winless in doubleheader versus Lipscomb

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University softball team was unable to get much going at the plate on Saturday dropping both games of its doubleheader against Lipscomb, losing game one 4-0 and game two 6-1 at Knights Field.

With the losses, the Knights drop to 12-21 overall, 4-7 in Atlantic Sun Conference play while the Bisons improve to 15-22, 4-7 in the ASUN.

Game One

Junior right-hander Claire Lehmkuhler opened the day with an easy three up, three down first inning, recording two strikeouts.

Lipscomb scratched across a run in the second, scoring a single unearned run after taking advantage of two fielding errors by the Knights.

As Lehmkuhler continued to hold the Bisons in check, Bellarmine sputtered on offense. The Knights finally gained some momentum late, getting a runner to third base with two outs in the fifth but were unable to bring the tying run home. Bellarmine again got runners in scoring position in the sixth, putting a runner at second and third with two outs but once again come up short and left the runners stranded.

The Bisons broke the game open in the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits to take a 4-0 advantage. In the home half of the inning BU went down in order, taking the 4-0 loss.

Game Two

Lipscomb picked up right where it left off, striking for two runs in the game's opening frame.

The Knights answered in the bottom of the first, getting their first run of the day. After a quick first out, junior Harlie Bickett got things started with a walk before stealing second to put herself into scoring position. Fellow junior Chloe Collins ripped a hard single at the shortstop to move Bickett to third base before junior Megan Konermann brought her home with an RBI ground out, cutting the deficit to one, down 2-1.

After a scoreless second, Lipscomb scratched another run across in the third to go back up two at 3-1.

Bellarmine got yet another runner into scoring position in the bottom of the third but was again stifled at the plate, coming up scoreless.

In the fifth inning, the Bisons struck again, this time for three runs to extend their lead to five, now up 6-1.

The lead would hold as Bellarmine was unable to get anymore offense going, taking the 6-1 loss to close out the doubleheader.

Bellarmine and Lipscomb will close out the series tomorrow, April 7, with first pitch set for 12 p.m. ET at Knights Field.
