CONWAY, Ark. – The Bellarmine University softball team opened its final series of the regular season at Central Arkansas on Friday night, falling 6-0 at Farris Field.
With the loss, the Knights move to 13-32 on the season, 5-17 in Atlantic Sun Conference play. With the win, the Bears improve to 24-25 overall, 15-7 in ASUN play.
UCA opened the scoring, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an RBI triple and RBI ground out.
Junior
Serenity Shemwell recorded the Knights first hit in the second, poking a single up the middle, but BU was unable to take advantage of the base runner.
The Bears tacked on another run in the second, extending their lead to 3-0.
After a scoreless third inning, Central Arkansas got back to it, putting up one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth, pushing its lead to 6-0.
The Knights put up their best rally in the sixth inning. After two quick outs, freshman
Brooke Shewmaker tallied the second hit of the night for Bellarmine, singling to second base. Junior
Harlie Bickett followed, reaching base via hit by pitch before a fielder's choice ground out ending the inning and the scoring chance.
Bellarmine held UCA off the scoreboard in the sixth but we're unable to get anything else going in the seventh, dropping game one 6-0.
The series between Bellarmine and Central Arkansas will wrap up tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET with game two set for 2:30 p.m. ET.
