LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team picked itself up off the mat on Sunday against North Alabama.
The Knights' encore was taking down the reigning ASUN champion.
Roaring back into the thick of the ASUN Tournament picture, Bellarmine knocked off a Lipscomb squad that was previously unbeaten in conference play as the Knights delivered a 2-1 victory over the Bisons on Wednesday night at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Sophomore forward
McKenzie Carle and redshirt senior midfielder
Sidney Rigsby recorded the goals for Bellarmine (10-5-2, 4-5 ASUN), which defeated Lipscomb (11-4-2, 7-1-1) for the first time in the Division-I era. The Bisons, who have already clinched the ASUN Gold Division championship, entered 6-0-2 against the Knights.
With the enormous victory in league play, Bellarmine vaulted from fifth into a tie for third place with North Alabama in the ASUN Gold Division with one game remaining (four of the six teams from the division qualify for the ASUN Tournament). The Knights once again added to their D1-era program record for wins, upping their tally to an even 10 under first-year head coach
Steve Bornhoffer.
The rejuvenated Knights put a four-game losing streak to rest Sunday with a 1-0 win at North Alabama and kept the momentum going against the 2024 ASUN Tournament champion. Lipscomb did land the first blow, as Maddy Rhodes headed in a corner kick by London De Fini in the 23rd minute.
Shots for both teams were hard to come by in the first half — and that narrative would not change in the second stanza — but Carle still managed to equalize the contest in the 34th minute. After receiving a pass from freshman midfielder
Nora Dimmitt, she darted up the middle of the field and unleashed a left-footer at the top of the box that scooted inside the left post for her ninth goal of the season.
Stout play from the defenses carried over into the second half, with quality looks again at a premium. Bellarmine capitalized on one of the few opportunities in the 82nd minute, as sophomore midfielder
Brynn Severance bent a corner kick toward the back post. Lipscomb's goalkeeper attempted to make a leaping grab but couldn't handle it cleanly, and Rigsby drilled the loose ball into the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Bellarmine's defense locked in and locked up the crucial victory as both teams finished with eight shots. The Knights had the edge on frame at 6-4, along with a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Bellarmine will conclude the regular season by hosting Austin Peay at 2 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
