SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bellarmine field hockey team fell 2-0 to Bryant Sunday afternoon at Steven and Lily Cowen Field in their final road match of the season.
Bellarmine (2-15, 2-6 MAC), playing without senior leader
Alicia Hudson for the second straight game, was unable to put any of their six shots in the cage while Bryant (4-12, 0-4 American East) snapped a three-game losing streak on their Senior Day.
Bryant thought they had taken a lead in the early minutes of the game when they scored during a penalty corner, however, the goal was overturned after a video review. Still, Bryant controlled possession for most of the opening quarter and held Bellarmine without a shot.
The Bulldogs did finally secure the game's first score with 2:17 remaining in the second when Ellie Picard, on the left side of the circle, found Alexa Sedicino alone on the right side of the circle. Sedicino wound up and fired a shot that deflected off keeper
Kailey Workman's foot and into the cage. It was the junior's second goal of the season and Picard's first career helper and point.
The Knights finally earned their first penalty corner four minutes into the second half, but
Mira Alcorn's shot, the first of the day for the Knights, was blocked.
About a minute later, Bryant would double their lead on a goal by Natalie Griffin after a Bellarmine turnover. The ball was taken by Picard, who drove along the left end line before sending it to Griffin waiting in front of the cage for her third goal of the season.
Bellarmine was unable to cash in on a few scoring opportunities late in the game. In one instance, a shot by
Anouk Richters on a fast break from the left shoulder just inside the circle banged off the left post. Four of the Knights' six shots came in the fourth quarter.
Bryant unleashed 11 shots, seven on goal, and held a 9-3 advantage in penalty corner opportunities.
Bellarmine will now turn their attention to Friday's matchup with Central Michigan. The Senior Day game is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
