Big performances by Waddell, Karasinski not enough as Wofford stops Knights

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Brian Waddell and Jack Karasinski each dropped in 23 points Saturday afternoon against Wofford, but the Knights would not be able to fend off the hot-shooting Terriers as the visitors walked out of Knights Hall with a 94-86 win.

Wofford (2-2) shot 54.9 percent from the field and, in fact, even better from beyond the arc at 57.1 percent.

Bellarmine (1-3) fell despite shooting 50.8 percent and having two players eclipse the 20-point mark for the first time this season. Sophomore guard Tyler Doyle also added 17. The 23 for Waddell set a new career high, surpassing his 17 from Wednesday night against Hanover. His six rebounds were also a new high.

After much of the first half was played within only a handful points, a four-point play by Nils Machowski with 5:11 remaining in the first swung the momentum heavily in favor of the Terriers. Machowski put Wofford up 35-28 before Kahmare Holmes added another trey for a seven-point burst.

Wofford, in fact, hit 12 of their first 14 three-point attempts to establish a 44-32 lead with 2:56 left in the first and would carry a 51-38 lead into the break.

A thunderous driving dunk by Waddell brought the audience inside Knights Hall to life and cut the lead to 12 momentarily with 16:13 remaining. Still, a layup on the other end by Rex Stirling would put Wofford back up 14 at 61-47, starting a 9-0 run.

The Terriers extended their lead to as high as 21 points, but a 15-0 run by Bellarmine, capped by a pair of Karasinski free throws, brought the Knights back within three at 73-70 with 7:32 remaining.

Wofford responded with a 7-2 run to go up 80-72. The Terriers hit 10 of their last 12 free throws down the stretch to ice the game, despite Bellarmine hitting five of their last seven field goal attempts to keep the pressure on their guests.

Machowski finished with a game-high 28 points, nearly doubling his previous career high of 15, and hit 14 of 16 free throws. Holmes finished with 24 to match his career high. Freshman forward Brian Sumpter maintained his status as a top-100 shot blocker in the country with a pair of rejections.

Bellarmine heads to Notre Dame on Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on ACC Network Extra.
