Women's soccer concludes historic season against North Florida in ASUN semifinals

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A historic season for the Bellarmine University women's soccer team came to an end Sunday at the FGCU Soccer Complex, as the Knights were defeated 2-0 by North Florida in the semifinals of the ASUN Championship.

North Florida (9-8-4), the Graphite Division three-seed, scored its pair of goals in the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes of the matchup with Gold Division four-seed Bellarmine, which finished the year 11-6-4.

Those 11 wins more than doubled the previous Division I-era program record and included Bellarmine's first-ever victory in the ASUN Championship, a 3-1 triumph over Graphite Division top-seed FGCU in the quarterfinals. The Knights' standard-setting season, the first under head coach Steve Bornhoffer, additionally included D1-era program records of seven road wins and a nine-game unbeaten streak.

North Florida, which extended its unbeaten streak to six, struck early, as Chloe Lynch converted her third goal of the season off an Isabella Pontieri assist in the fifth minute.

The contest remained 1-0 at halftime and stayed that way for much of the second half, but North Florida's Paige McSwigan managed to score in traffic off a corner kick for an insurance goal in the 82nd minute.

The defenses allowed only a modest amount of shots in the match. North Florida finished with a 12-9 advantage, including 6-2 on frame. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Anna Jenkins had multiple spectacular saves for the Knights.
