Goodin hits six threes as Men's Basketball earns 70-58 win at The Citadel

Knights get their first DI win of the season

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Bellarmine Knights Men's Basketball used hot three-point shooting, opportunistic defense, and a slow and methodical offensive attack en route to a 70-58 road victory over The Citadel Bulldogs.  With the win, the first over a Division I opponent both of the season and of head coach Doug Davenport's career, the Knights improve to 2-4 on the season.

It was a game of runs early on, with Bellarmine taking an early 5-4 lead before a 7-0 Bulldogs run made it 11-5.  After an exchange of baskets, Bellarmine got their transition offense going and went on a 13-2 run that was highlighted by five points from Jack Karasinski.  The Citadel responded again with an 8-2 run.  The Knights answered with back-to-back baskets from Michael Wilson Jr. and the Bulldogs once again countered with a 6-0 spurt.  Bellarmine fired the last shot of the first half as Kenyon Goodin spearheaded a 9-2 run with three of his five first half three-pointers to give Bellarmine a 35-31 lead going into the locker room.

Myles Watkins kept the Knights offense going to start the second half, finding Karasinski and Sam Donald for layups before Goodin dished it out to Wilson for a three-pointer that stretched the Bellarmine lead to 42-32.  The Bulldogs cut it to single digits, but the Knights once again had the answer as Karasinski and Brian Waddell each hit a triple to push the Bellarmine lead to 50-37.  The Bulldogs responded again with back-to-back baskets, but the Knights then blew the game open with a 13-4 run highlighted by six points from Waddell to take a 63-45 lead with 5:36 to go.  The Bulldogs fought to get back into it, but Bellarmine controlled the game from that point on, never allowing their lead to dip back under double digits.

Goodin led all scorers with 24 points on a career-high six made three-point attempts.  Overall, he shot 8-of-13 from the field and 6-of-9 from three-point range.  He also had three rebounds and three assists.  Karasinski scored 16 points, his fifth double-digit performance in as many games this season.  Waddell scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.  Wilson went 4-of-7 from the field and scored 10 points.  Donald was Bellarmine's leading rebounder with five.  He also tied Watkins for the team high in assists with four.

As a team, the Knights shot 25-of-50 from the field, their fourth straight game shooting at least 50% from the floor.  Bellarmine tied their season best with 11 made three-pointers while holding The Citadel to just 3-of-24 from beyond the arc.  The Knights had 16 total assists to seven turnovers while forcing The Citadel into 12 turnovers with only five assists.  The Knights made the most of their defensive effort, leading the Bulldogs 20-9 in points off turnovers.

Up next, Bellarmine will remain in Charleston for a neutral site game against the Houston Christian Huskies back at McAlister Field House Tuesday night at 7 PM.
