TROY, Ala. — The Bellarmine University baseball team engaged in a one-run game with No. 25 Troy through seven innings Sunday before the Trojans pulled out a 7-3 win over the Knights in the series finale at Riddle-Pace Field.
While Troy (3-0) swept the series, Bellarmine (0-3) hung with the Trojans in the final two games. In the capper, the Knights were within 4-3 of Troy through seven innings before a three-run eighth provided the Trojans some padding.
Bellarmine only got outhit 8-7 by Troy, but the Trojans' Shane Lewis did homer twice while the team added five doubles. Although they improved from the first two games, the Knights nonetheless issued seven walks and the free passes reached double digits via three hit batsmen.
Bellarmine scored all three of its runs over the first three innings. In the second, the Knights strung together three straight hits, as junior right fielder
Joey Milto clubbed a double, sophomore designated hitter
Nick Gnardellis singled and freshman catcher
Mason Acton laced an RBI single.
Freshman shortstop
Landon Akers led off the third with a double, stole third and jogged home on a muffed throw. The Knights added another run when senior first baseman
Casey Sorg beat out an infield single and an error on the exchange at first allowed another run to cross to tie it at 3.
Led by strong relief pitching, Troy shut out Bellarmine over the final six innings. Junior right-hander
Oliver Ward had a notable relief outing as well for the Knights after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings while senior right-hander
Clay Kennedy fanned a pair in 1.0 inning of work.
Milto concluded his impressive series with a 3-for-4 outing. He went 7-for-11 (.636) with a homer, triple and two doubles over the three games.
Bellarmine's home opener scheduled for Wednesday against Akron has been canceled due to inclement weather. The Knights will begin a three-game series at Northern Kentucky with a 2 p.m. (ET) contest Friday.
