CHATTANOOGA, Tn. – The Bellarmine University wrestling team ended its regular season on the road on Sunday, taking a tough 16-15 loss to University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Maclellan Gym.
Bellarmine ends the regular season 6-4 overall, 5-3 in the Southern Conference.
"Proud of my guys fight! Today didn't end up being our day," head coach
Ned Shuck said. "I'm super confident in my team taking the right approach to get back at it and prepare for conference. They are resilient and battled tested. It's going to be a fun finish to the season."
Jack Parker got the dual started in the Knights' favor, winning an 8-5 decision at the 125-pound weight class.
After losses in the next two bouts,
Zac Cowan evened the score 6-6 with a 4-1 decision win at 149.
Cole Nance followed with a 13-8 decision at 165 before
Devan Hendricks and
Andrew Liber tallied back-to-back decisions at 184 and 197 to give Bellarmine a narrow 15-14 lead with one match left.
Chattanooga ultimately came away with the win after a 4-2 decision in the heavyweight class. Following the win, the Mocs docked one team point due to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, resulting in a 16-15 final score.
Up next, the Knights will take some extra time to prepare for their first ever Southern Conference Championship appearance.
