Softball splits Make it Happen Tournament day two

MADEIRA BEACH, Fl. – Bellarmine softball continued its weekend in Florida with another two-game day, once again splitting action. First, the Knights topped Bethune-Cookman 2-0 before falling to Binghamton 3-2.

With the 1-1 day, Bellarmine moves to 3-7 on the year.

The first game of the day was a defensive dual to start. Neither team tallied a base hit until the third inning when Bethune-Cookman knocked a single to center field.

Bellarmine got its first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth, a double down the left field line by Harlie Bickett. The Knights would not convert the scoring effort, however.

The Wildcats had a runner on second in the top of the fifth, but a great defensive effort by Jadyn Thompson to chase down a long fly ball and then gun down the runner scrambling back to second ended the inning with a bang.

In the bottom of the sixth, Bellarmine finally broke the stalemate. Thompson started the frame a single before Bickett walked. After the first out, Chloe Collins stepped to the plate and delivered a single to right field, scoring both Thompson and Bickett to put the Knights ahead 2-0.

On for her second inning of work, Selena Zuniga closed the game with a pop fly and a pair of strikeouts to earn her second save of the season. Claire Lehmkuhler earned the win thanks to her 5.0 shutout innings, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts.

The Knights carried momentum from the win into the second game. After two quick outs in the opening frame, Collins launched her first home run of the season, putting Bellarmine up 1-0.

Lydia Stowe led off the top of the second inning for Bellarmine, making her first start of the season. Stowe stayed patient and found her pitch, driving a home run to left field for her first career hit and home run.

Binghamton finally answered in the third, scoring three runs thanks to an RBI ground out and two-run home run, to jump ahead 3-2.

In the fourth, the Knights had their best chance to score, loading the bases with two outs but nothing came of the threat.

The Bearcats would go on to keep Bellarmine off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game, winning 3-2.

Despite taking the loss, Kelsie Houchens pitched another solid 6.0 innings, allowing the three runs on just three hits with four strikeouts. Stowe, Madison Davis and Brooke Shewmaker all turned in mutli-hit games, recording two hits each.

Up next, Bellarmine will close out its weekend with one final contest on Sunday, March 2 against Butler.
