Baseball explodes for season's highest-scoring output in 18-8 win over Eagles

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Landon Akers blasted a leadoff home run, and it was if the Bellarmine University freshman infielder lit the fuse on stick of dynamite that was, in this case, BU's offense Tuesday afternoon at Knights Field.

Akers triggered a four-run first inning and Bellarmine never looked back in rolling to an 18-8 win over Morehead State as the Knights produced their highest-scoring outing of the season.

Bellarmine (5-15), which has won three of its four midweek home games this year, matched the four-run first in the second inning and piled up five more runs in the third in tearing out to a 13-1 lead. The Knights racked up five more runs in the sixth while pounding out 14 hits against the Eagles (8-11).

Akers' homer was his fourth of the season. The Knights didn't go deep again but Akers and junior Garrett Rusch both doubled and junior Joey Milto swatted a pair of two-baggers.

Akers, Milto, junior Luke Scales and freshmen Christian Kiper and Mason Acton collected two hits apiece. Acton amassed four RBI and Scales drove in three.

Following Akers' long ball, junior left fielder Eli Watson and Scales executed a double steal to produce a run and Kiper had an RBI single as Bellarmine jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Milto then had an RBI double and Acton delivered a two-run single as the Knights plated four more runs in the second.

Scales and Acton both had two-run singles during a five-run third that blew the game open ultimately for good. Rusch had a two-run double and junior Connor Pawlowski added an RBI single as the Knights poured in five more runs in the sixth.

Making his first career start in a Bellarmine uniform, junior right-hander Oliver Ward helped ensure a slugfest wasn't in order, as he allowed a single run while striking out four in 3.0 innings pitched. Senior right-hander Hudson Cornett tossed a pair of shutout innings, and senior right-hander Logan Haslam finished it off with a scoreless ninth.

Bellarmine will play a three-game ASUN series Friday-Sunday at Lipscomb, with the opener set for 7 p.m. (ET).
