LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University softball team closed its Atlantic Sun Conference series against Eastern Kentucky on a cold, rainy Sunday morning, falling 9-0 in five innings at Knights Field.
With the loss, the Knights move to 4-17 overall and 0-6 in the ASUN.
Eastern Kentucky jumped in front for the third straight game, scoring two runs in the game's opening frame.
Bellarmine had its best scoring chance of the game in the bottom of the second. Senior
Chloe Collins led the inning off with a walk, followed by a single to right field off the bat of freshman
Peyton Arnold to get two runners on with no outs. Pinch running for Collins, sophomore
Kendall Gaddie reached third in the next at-bat after a fielder's choice allowed senior
Mackayla Denney to reach base. Despite a runner on third with one out, the Knights were unable to get a run across the plate.
The Colonels got their offense going again in the third, putting up three more runs to take a 5-0 lead. They followed with two additional runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to go up 9-0.
Junior
Madison Davis started the bottom of the fifth with a bloop single to second base, but nothing came of the hit as the Knights fell 9-0.
Along with Arnold and Davis, junior
Jacklyn Zuege and senior
Megan Konermann tallied a hit each in the game.
Freshman
Makenzie Cowburn made her collegiate debut, pitching the fifth inning.
Up next, Bellarmine starts a four-game road trip with a midweek contest at Morehead State on Wednesday, March 26.
