Baseball drops doublheader against Austin Peay

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University baseball team dropped an Atlantic Sun Conference split-site doubleheader Friday, falling 13-3 at Knights Field and 11-1 at St. Xavier High School to Austin Peay.

GAME 1: Austin Peay 13, Bellarmine 3
Austin Peay led just 1-0 after three innings, but a three-run homer by Cameron Nickens powered a four-run fourth. Trevor Conley added a two-run homer in the seventh, and John Bay had a three-run triple in a four-run eighth.

Bellarmine scored all three of its runs in the eighth. Sophomore Nick Gnardellis highlighted the frame by drilling his first homer as a Knight.

Junior Luke Scales collected two of Bellarmine's six hits. Senior Casey Sorg was 1-for-1 with four walks.

GAME 2: Austin Peay 11, Bellarmine 1
Bellarmine trailed 4-0 after four innings, but Austin Peay broke the game open with a six-run fifth. The Governors belted four homers in the contest, two off the bat of Bay.

Bellarmine plated its lone run in the sixth when senior Jacob Rowold ripped a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Scales.

Seven Knights had one hit each. Sophomore right-hander Sam Matherly did not allow an earned run in 2.0 innings of relief.

The series finale is set for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Xavier High School.
