LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The bring-down-the-house ending provided by
Casey Sorg was great theatre.
But the first two acts were all about
Zach Horwith and
Mike Sokol.
On Saturday afternoon at Knights Field, Horwith and Sokol combined for an 11-inning shutout while Sorg launched a walk-off homer in a 1-0 victory over Central Arkansas in Atlantic Sun Conference play.
The scoreboard read all zeroes until Sorg stepped to the plate leading off the bottom of the 11th inning. The senior center fielder unloaded on the first pitch he saw from Perry Titlow, crushing a high drive over the right-field fence for a walk-off homer and his fifth round-tripper of the season.
Horwith and Sokol set the stage for Bellarmine (9-25, 5-9 ASUN). The duo teamed up to deliver Bellarmine's second shutout in the Division-I era, both coming this season. It's the Knights' first-ever shutout in the NCAA's highest level that came in extra innings.
A sophomore right-hander, Horwith tossed 6.0 scoreless innings while allowing four hits and striking out two. Sokol, a senior right-hander, fired 5.0 scoreless frames and earned the win while yielding three hits and fanning three. He escaped a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the 10th inning.
Charlie Christensen was masterful for Central Arkansas (13-20, 7-7). The right-hander hurled 9.0 scoreless innings while allowing six hits and striking out five.
Both teams registered seven hits in the pitchers' duel. Sorg, freshman
Landon Akers and junior
Eli Watson notched two apiece for the Knights.
The teams will conclude the series at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Knights Field.
