LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Bellarmine softball made a short return home for a midweek contest against Tennessee Tech on Wednesday afternoon at Knights Field, falling 9-1 in six innings.
In what started as a pitcher's duel, Bellarmine (4-22) had a chance to score in the second inning after a leadoff double by senior
Reni Shemwell but were unable to cash in on the extra-base hit.
Tennessee Tech was the first to put a run on the board, scoring three in the third inning. The Golden Eagles followed with another three spot in the fifth to take a 6-0 lead.
In the home half of the fifth, sophomore
Lilli Burns knocked a single into left field with one out for Bellarmine's second hit of the game. With two away in the frame, freshman
Lauren Guthrie was called on to pinch hit. Guthrie made the most of the at-bat, belting a double to left center field for her first career hit. She also brought Burns around to score for her first RBI and BU's first run of the game.
The Golden Eagles tacked on another three runs in the sixth before shutting down the Knights in the bottom of the inning to take a 9-1 mercy rule win.
Up next, Bellarmine returns to the road and ASUN play, traveling to Clarksville, TN for a three-game series at Austin Peay State University.
