LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Early run production and a heavy dose of senior right-hander
Cooper Hellman in the latter half of the contest drove the Bellarmine University baseball team to an 8-6 win over Eastern Kentucky in an Atlantic Sun Conference series opener Thursday at Knights Field.
Bellarmine (15-38, 9-19 ASUN) triumphed over in-state conference rival Eastern Kentucky (11-42, 8-20) two days after its historic 10-9 victory over crosstown foe and No. 21 Louisville.
Bellarmine plated five runs in the third inning to build a 7-2 lead, but Hellman ultimately was the savior after Eastern Kentucky rallied to within 7-6. The righty entered in the sixth and didn't allow more than one baserunner to each in any of his four shutout frames while striking out three.
Of the two batters that reached against Hellman — both singles — neither advanced past first base. With the tying run at the plate in the ninth, he fanned his second consecutive batter to sew up the victory. Hellman was credited with the win.
Bellarmine got on the board in the second on back-to-back doubles by junior
Luke Scales and senior
Jacob Rowold. Junior
Charlie Rife drove in another run on a ground out.
Bellarmine then piled up five runs in the third. After freshman
Landon Akers led off with an infield single, junior
Joey Milto plated him with a triple down the right-field line.
After senior
Casey Sorg collected an RBI on a ground out, junior
Eli Watson smashed a solo homer for his fourth round-tripper of the season. Rowold then followed a walk by Scales with a two-run shot, his first homer of the season.
After Eastern Kentucky rallied within 7-6, Bellarmine scored its final run in the eighth on a Colonels' throwing error. Hellman did the rest.
Rowold went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Scales went 2-for-2 with a double and walked twice. Sophomore left-hander
Aaron Ragat tossed two scoreless innings to start the game.
The second game of the series is set for 1 p.m. (ET) Friday.
