MOREHEAD, Ky. — Concluding a seemingly endless, six-state, 13-game road swing, the Bellarmine University baseball team could understandably have been overwhelmed by travel weariness.
But on Wednesday at Allen Field, the Knights didn't pack it in — they poured it on.
Bellarmine bashed its way to several big innings while steamrolling to a 19-9 win over Morehead State as the Knights swept both meetings this season with the in-state Eagles.
Bellarmine (12-36) tied a season high and Division I-era program record with its 19 runs. All of those runs came via RBI, with the 19 ribbies representing a D1-era program record. The Knights' 15 hits set a new season high while their three home runs and four doubles both tied their second-highest outputs of the year.
Morehead State (12-35) faced the minimum number of Knights over the first two innings, but Bellarmine exploded for six runs in the third. It was a sign of things to come, as BU piled up five runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings.
Junior
Garrett Rusch finished a triple shy of the cycle. He got the onslaught started in the third by swatting an opposite-field, two-run homer for his first round-tripper in a Knights uniform. Rusch barely missed a second long ball before logging an RBI double, and he also collected an RBI single while going 3-for-5 with four RBI.
Sophomore
Nick Gnardellis capped the six-run third by launching a tape-measure, three-run homer. It was his third time going deep this season.
Senior
Casey Sorg added a three-run homer of his own. His seventh shot of the season, which was also a no-doubter, came in the sixth as Bellarmine's lead ballooned to 17-1. Sorg also had an RBI single while racking up five RBI.
Junior
Charlie Rife nearly blasted a pinch-hit homer in the fifth before pulling up to second with an RBI double. Rusch, junior
Luke Scales and senior
Jacob Rowold all had RBI singles in the five-run frame.
Sorg's three-run dinger in the sixth was preceded by RBI doubles by Rusch and Scales. Scales matched Rusch with three hits and both scored three runs.
Bellarmine would have wrapped up the game in the seventh if not for a pair of two-out errors that opened the door to a six-run inning by Morehead State. However, the Eagles walked five Knights in the eighth to force in two runs, and senior
Blake Donnan tossed a scoreless bottom half as BU sealed the run-rule victory.
Senior right-hander
Arren Hash struck out three in 2.1 scoreless innings of relief and was credited with the win. In addition to its 15 hits, Bellarmine drew 11 walks, the fifth time this season the Knights have cracked double digits in that area.
Bellarmine will host Lipscomb in an ASUN series Friday-Sunday at Knights Field, with first pitches set for 3 p.m., 3 p.m. and 1 p.m.
