LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Shooting guard Ava Smith, a transfer from Utah State University, has signed with the Bellarmine University women's basketball team.
A rising sophomore, Smith appeared in 17 games with one start as a true freshman in 2024-25 for Utah State. The 5-foot-8 two-guard averaged nearly nine minutes per game.
"Ava is a highly skilled, knockdown shooter with great work ethic," Bellarmine head coach
Monique Reid said. "Her versatility allows her to play multiple positions, making her a valuable asset on both ends of the floor. She brings big energy and has a high basketball IQ. We're super excited to have her here!"
Smith knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in scoring a season-high nine points against San Diego State on Jan. 18. In her first collegiate start Jan. 21 against New Mexico, she distributed a season-best three assists.
"I chose Bellarmine because of the incredible culture, strong academics and energy Coach Mo brings to the program," Smith said. "Her success and passion for the game stood out right away, and I knew I wanted to be a part of what she's building. The way she pushes her players while truly caring about their growth — on and off the court — made Bellarmine feel like the perfect fit."
A native of Camas, Washington, Smith was a four-year letter winner at Union High School and a McDonald's All-American nominee. She joined the program's 1,000-point club and was a three-time All-Region selection and four-time All-League honoree, including earning first-team plaudits for three straight years.
As a senior in 2023-24, Smith averaged 14.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 2.0 steals per game. She helped power the Titans to a 19-5 mark that set a new school record for wins. In addition, she played club basketball for Tree of Hope EYBL, helping her squad win an AAU national championship in 2023.
