Men's soccer opens season with 1-1 draw at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — Sophomore forward Johan Nissen-Lie scored in the opening minutes, but the Bellarmine University men's soccer team ultimately deadlocked 1-1 with Evansville in their season opener Thursday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium.

It was a familiar result between Bellarmine (0-0-1) and reigning MVC Tournament champion Evansville (0-0-1), teams that met for the fifth time in six years in a season opener and are 1-1-3 against each other in that time.

The latest match began splendidly for Bellarmine as Nissen-Lie found the net in the fifth minute. It was the second goal of his career.

Bellarmine took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but Evansville equalized the contest in the 54th minute on a successful penalty kick by Tancredi Fadda.

Evansville finished with a 10-4 advantage in shots, including 4-2 on frame. Senior Peter Van Euwen collected three saves in goal for Bellarmine.

Bellarmine will play at 7:30 p.m. (ET) Monday at Kentucky.
