MOREHEAD, Ky. — Sophomore forward
McKenzie Carle and redshirt senior defender
Sidney Rigsby were both named to the Preseason All-ASUN Team.
Thursday evening proved to be a strong reminder of why.
Carle delivered a brace and Rigsby assisted on both goals as the Bellarmine University women's soccer team triumphed 2-1 over Morehead State at MSU Soccer Field.
With the victory over the Eagles (2-6), Bellarmine (5-0-2) tied a pair of landmarks. Through only seven games, the Knights have matched their Division I-era program record for wins set last season with five and equaled the D1-era mark for unbeaten streak first set in 2021 at seven.
All of this has come in
Steve Bornhoffer's first season as the head coach.
The decorated duo of Carle and Rigsby powered Bellarmine to the two goals it needed to produce the latest win. In the 17th minute, MSU's goalkeeper made a diving save on Rigsby's header attempt off a free kick, but Carle raced in for an easy one-touch on a rebound goal.
Morehead State's Kennedy Baquero equalized the contest in the 22nd minute after sinking a free kick just outside the box. That's how the score would stand at halftime and throughout most of the second half.
With Rigsby involved in the attack in crunch time, Bellarmine broke up the tie inside the last nine minutes. She expertly threaded a through ball ahead to Carle near the top of the box. The reigning ASUN Freshman of the Year took aim close to the 6, pinballing her shot off the right post and into the net for a 2-1 lead that held up.
With the two goals, Carle boosted her total to five on the season. It was her second career brace after she scored two goals last year against Queens. The pair of assists was Rigsby's first two helpers of the season to go along with her two goals.
Bellarmine finished with a 16-11 advantage in shots, including 10-3 on frame.
The Knights play at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday at Kennesaw State.
