LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team delivered one of its best defensive performances of the season and owned a decisive shot advantage, but the Knights had to settle for a scoreless draw Thursday with West Florida in Atlantic Sun Conference play at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Bellarmine (5-6-3, 3-2-2 ASUN) suffered its first shutout since the third game of the season. However, the defense recorded its third clean sheet. It was just the third time West Florida (7-2-3, 3-2-2) has been blanked this year.
Bellarmine finished with a 15-5 advantage in shots, including 9-3 in the first half and 6-2 in the second stanza. West Florida did have a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
It was the first time all season the Knights shot less than a 50-percent clip on frame, but they still had close calls. Late in the second half, junior midfielder
Brynn Severance ripped a free kick just a shade over the crossbar from a yard outside the box. With five minutes left, sophomore forward
Makenzie Simpson laced a shot from the top of the box that was a tad right.
Bellarmine sophomore goalkeeper
Anna Jenkins collected three saves, two of which were spectacular. In the first half, an Argo had a full head of steam before laying into a shot from 10 yards, but Jenkins batted the attempt away. In the second half, an Argo had a near breakaway before pulling up from the top of the box and whizzing a shot that Jenkins deflected away after leaping and fully extending.
Bellarmine will host Queens at 1 p.m. (ET) Sunday.
