Women's soccer locks up 3-seed with draw against Lipscomb

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Bellarmine University women's soccer team would have preferred the three points that come with a win in Atlantic Sun Conference play.

But the Knights will certainly take the three-seed that came with one point.

On Saturday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, Bellarmine concluded the regular season with a 1-1 draw against Lipscomb, a result that sealed the 3-seed in the ASUN Tournament.

That's the highest seed Bellarmine (6-6-5, 4-2-4 ASUN) has achieved in the postseason in the Division-I era. The Knights will resume play against the team they just faced, as Lipscomb (6-4-7, 3-3-4) garnered the six-seed. They'll square off in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. (ET) Thursday at second-seeded North Florida, which earned a bye into the semifinals.

Like it did in its 3-2 win over Lipscomb in Nashville, Bellarmine struck early against the Bisons in the return bout. In the sixth minute, sophomore forward Katie Paulakonis headed in a free kick from junior defender Mckenzie Price for a 1-0 lead. It was Paulakonis' eighth goal of the season.

While Bellarmine scored early, Lipscomb equalized late. Natalia Carapazza managed to tie it up in the 81st minute off a long free kick that sailed inside the back post for her first goal of the season.

Lipscomb finished with a 13-8 advantage in shots, with a 7-6 edge on frame.
