Softball picks up another win on day two of the Make It Happen Games

MADEIRA BEACH, Fl. – Bellarmine softball collected another win on the second day of the Make It Happen Games, defeating Monmouth 5-3 before falling to UMass 3-0 to end the day at R.O.C. Park.

After two scoreless innings, the Knights (4-12) exploded in the third, putting up five runs. Sophomore Lele Bennett got the scoring started with a two-run homer to right center field, her second home run in as many days. After the first out was made, senior Jacklyn Zuege smoked a double to the fence in left center field, followed immediately by a double down the left field line off the bat of freshman Jayla Manning as the two traded places for another run. With two outs in the frame, junior Kendall Gaddie did the final damage with a two RBI single to left, making the score 5-0.

Monmouth finally got its first run of the contest in the next inning, scoring on a groundout.

Playing as the home team, the Hawks had the last at-bat. They made a run at a rally, plating two more runs on another ground out and an RBI single, but the Knights closed out the game for the 5-3 win.

Bennett led the Knights on both sides of the ball, hitting the home run while also tossing a 7.0 inning complete game, allowing the three runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Fellow
sophomore Lauren Guthrie was the only other Knight with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run.

The second game of the day was a much different story for Bellarmine.

After an error allowed UMass to score two runs in the game's opening frame, BU settled in and shutout the Minutewomen for the next three innings. In the fifth, UMass scored again on a double to left center.

Bellarmine turned in just three hits in the game, falling 3-0.

Up next, the Knights will conclude play in the Make It Happen Games with one final game on Sunday, March 1, taking on UAlbany. At the conclusion of the game, Bellarmine will also pick up its
suspended game with Siena, finishing the final two and two third innings with a 6-0 lead.
