Softball held winless on day two of UWG Opening Weekend Event

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Bellarmine softball suffered another two losses on the second day of the UWG Opening Weekend Event, falling to Drexel and West Georgia on Saturday.

BU dropped the opening game of the day 10-5 to Drexel before losing to West Georgia 6-5 in the afternoon session.

The Knights once again displayed an improved offense, turning in 10+ hits and five runs in each game on the day.

In the first game, freshman Jayla Manning continued her strong opening weekend with an RBI single in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1.

From there, sophomore Morgan Williams brought home another run with her first hit of the year in the bottom of the third, cutting the Drexel lead to 4-2. The Dragons poured on four runs in the fourth to take a comfortable lead, but Bellarmine continued to play hard as junior Nicole Waters and seniors Jacklyn Zuege and Madison Davis each tallied an RBI.

Zuege, Manning, Davis and freshman Tia Ice all collected two hits in the game.

Moving into the second game of the day, Bellarmine put the first run on the board thanks fielder's choice play that allowed junior Kendall Gaddie to score in the top of the second inning.
West Georgia overtook the lead in the third, bringing two runs home on a ground out and RBI double to go up 2-1.

Bellarmine flipped the game in its favor in the next inning, thanks to a two RBI double off the bat of sophomore Peyton Arnold, putting the Knights ahead 3-2.

In the fifth, the Wolves once again took the lead, scoring three runs for a 5-3 lead.

The Knights again held their ground, fighting to the end. In the top of the fifth, Zuege came through with another clutch hit, bringing home two runs on a single through the left side, tying the game at 5-5.
Unfortunately, West Georgia had more offensive push left, scratching across one more run in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead at 6-5 before closing out the game in the seventh for the win.

Ice led Bellarmine with three hits in the fame while Davis added two of her own as the only Knights with a multi-hit effort.

Up next, Bellarmine will close out its first weekend of play at the UWG Opening Weekend Event on Sunday, February 8 with a fifth and final game against Georgia State.
