LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Long Island commanded the second half of a 15-7 win over the Bellarmine University lacrosse team Sunday at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Although Bellarmine (4-4) held a 6-5 lead at the break, LIU (4-1) outscored the Knights 10-1 in the second half, including 7-0 in the game-altering third quarter.
LIU posted a 17-8 advantage in face-offs, was perfect on its clear attempts (20-for-20), finished plus-9 in the turnover column and had a 55-23 advantage in shots, including 34-13 on goal.
Four players combined for all of LIU's goals. Ben McIsaac supplied a game-high six, Ben Schuster tallied four, Drew Togno notched three and Aidan Zuhoski contributed two. Schuster had three consecutive goals during one stretch of the decisive third quarter. The Sharks bridged the third and the fourth periods with eight straight goals.
Sophomore attack
Joe Alie led Bellarmine with three goals, marking his fifth hat trick of the season. Alie beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter to stake the Knights to a 4-2 lead. Freshman attack
Jack Fischel recorded the final goal of the first half for a 6-5 advantage, BU's final one of the contest.
Nolan Hudnut matched a season high with 19 saves for Bellarmine. It was the seventh time this season the sophomore goalkeeper collected 13 saves or more.
Bellarmine will play at noon (ET) Saturday at Robert Morris.
