Baseball Opens Road Swing with 10-5 Win at EKU Behind Carver’s Strong Start

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bellarmine opened its eight-game road swing in strong fashion Friday night, defeating Eastern Kentucky 10-5 at Turkey Hughes Field at Earle Combs Stadium. The Knights backed a dominant outing from Chase Carver with a 13-hit offensive performance to take the series opener.

Carver delivered his longest outing of the season, working seven innings and earning the win while allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. The seven-inning effort marked Carver's deepest start since Bellarmine's first series against Middle Tennessee on Feb. 14.

Bellarmine jumped on the board immediately in the top of the first inning. Landon Akers led off the game with a double and later scored on an RBI single by Jake Bell. The Knights added another run in the frame when Luke Scales ripped an RBI double to left center to give Bellarmine a 2-0 advantage.

The Knights extended their lead in the second. Nick Gnardellis opened the inning with a solo home run, and Akers later doubled home a run before AJ Swader added an RBI single to push the Bellarmine lead to 5-0.

Eastern Kentucky responded with three runs in the bottom of the third, but Bellarmine answered in the fourth with a pair of solo shots. Logan Murphy launched a home run to right field before Akers followed with a blast to left, restoring the Knights' cushion at 7-3.

The offense continued to produce late in the game. Bellarmine added two runs in the seventh, highlighted by another RBI double from Scales, and tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly from Swader.

Akers led the offensive charge, going 3-for-5 with four runs scored and two RBIs while adding two doubles and a home run. Scales also recorded three hits and two RBIs, while Swader added three hits and two RBIs. Gnardellis and Murphy each homered as the Knights finished with 13 hits on the night.

Austin Egan and Aaron Ragat combined to close out the final two innings on the mound as Bellarmine secured the 10-5 victory.

Bellarmine continues its ASUN series at Eastern Kentucky on Saturday (1 p.m. ET) in Richmond.
