HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — The Bellarmine University men's soccer team netted a pair of second-half goals in rallying for a 2-1 win over Northern Kentucky on Sunday night at NKU Soccer Stadium.
The victory for Bellarmine (2-0-1) marked the first-ever road win as a head coach for
Matt Cannady, whose squad trailed 1-0 at halftime after Northern Kentucky (0-2-1) capitalized on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.
After a quiet first half that followed a scoreless draw against Xavier in which shots were scant, Bellarmine's offense came alive in the second half against the Norse. The Knights equalized the contest in the 65th minute as junior midfielder
Teddy Franke ripped in a shot from 14 yards off a pass from senior midfielder
Tate McCrery.
About 10 minutes later, Bellarmine found the net again. It started with a give-and-go between McCrery and freshman midfielder
David Skorupan, the latter of whom located junior forward
Johan Nissen-Lie near the right corner of the 6. Nissen-Lie went low toward the back post and connected with senior midfielder
Colin Mackey, whose sliding shot gave the Knights a 2-1 lead.
The match was a card-fest for Northern Kentucky. The Norse finished with six yellow cards and a red card. The dismissal came in the 87th minute as the Knights had little trouble bleeding the clock while sewing up the win.
Bellarmine finished with a 12-11 advantage in shots behind a 7-3 edge in the second half. The Knights also had a 7-3 advantage on frame and 9-7 edge on corner kicks.
Bellarmine will open ASUN play by hosting Stetson at 7 p.m. (ET) Saturday.
