PENSACOLA, Fla. — Sophomore midfielder
Bartosz Wojda had a brace for the Bellarmine University men's soccer team, but West Florida scored twice inside the last 11 minutes in rallying to defeat the Knights 3-2 in Atlantic Sun Conference play Saturday at UWF Soccer Complex.
The goals were the first two of the season for Wojda. He rebounded a save of his own shot and sent it into the net in the 12th minute to stake Bellarmine (5-2-2, 1-2 ASUN) to an early lead.
Wojda's second goal against West Florida (2-5-1, 2-2) came in the 51st minute. Senior midfielder
Colin Mackey crossed to him near the center of the box, and Wojda slotted a shot inside the left post.
West Florida answered both goals. The first came from Chase Haskins in the 19th minute as the teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.
Nikolas Rodriguez Alzate then equalized the contest at 2 in the 80th minute. Alzate followed by providing the game-winner in the 84th minute as West Florida excelled on set pieces behind facilitator Rafael Esteves, who was credited with assists on all three goals.
West Florida finished with a 19-16 advantage in shots, but the Knights had a 10-7 edge on frame.
Bellarmine will return to the Sunshine State to face FGCU at 7 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, Oct. 3.
