Prior to the 2020 men’s and women’s basketball season, the Knights struck a multi-year deal with Kentucky Venues to play their home basketball games at iconic Freedom Hall. Freedom Hall has been a staple of basketball history in the state of Kentucky and will offer an exciting and historic experience for all of Knights Nation.
Constructed in 1956, Freedom Hall has long been one of the most prominent event venues in the state of Kentucky. Serving as the primary arena on the grounds of the Kentucky Exposition Center, Freedom Hall is rich in history as host of a myriad of events.
Freedom Hall was first home to the Louisville Cardinals men’s basketball program and remained their home stadium from the stadium’s inception in 1956 to 2010, with the women’s basketball program joining them when the program began in 1975. During that time, the stadium was also home to several other teams and programs. Most notable of which was the Kentucky Colonels, a former professional basketball team playing in the American Basketball Association until the ABA merged with the NBA in 1976. The stadium has also hosted NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament games ten different years, with 6 of which including Final Four games.
As a concert and event venue, Freedom Hall and the Kentucky Exposition Center have been hosting some of the biggest names in music as well as several other large-scale events that bring in a national audience. Freedom Hall has hosted concerts for Kiss, ACDC, WWE Events, Mötley Crüe, Elvis Presley, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Creed, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen and many more. The exposition center is home to the Kentucky State Fair, World’s Championship Horse Show, North American International Livestock Exposition, National Farm Machinery Show, and more.
The stadium seats 18,865 for basketball events and can accommodate up to 19,200 for concerts and events that can utilize floor-level seating. Stadium seating is all single person, backed seats for a comfortable game experience for all fans. The stadium also features luxurious box seating. The common areas of the stadium include a variety of concession vendors and accessible restrooms. Around the interior wall of the common area halls, you will find the Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame, which includes a plaque honoring some of the most decorated and iconic athletes and coaches across all sports in Kentucky state history.
