Mike Goetz joined the Bellarmine University men’s soccer staff as an assistant prior to the spring 2021 season and is currently the program's director of operations.
In 2023, Bellarmine made its first-ever appearance in the ASUN Championship finals after earning the two-seed and defeating Stetson 3-2 in double overtime in the semifinals. It was the fourth straight season in which the Knights played in at least the semifinal round. Matthew Brozovich was named ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year, Brock Pope was recognized as the ASUN Defensive Player of the Year and Bellarmine earned seven additional postseason conference awards (four All-Conference, two All-Academic Team, one All-Freshman Team). Pope and midfielder Brendan Schoemehl also garnered All-Region plaudits.
After coming close its first two seasons in the NCAA's highest level, Bellarmine in 2022 achieved a winning record (6-4-8) for the first time in the Division-I era. The Knights earned a berth in the ASUN Championship semifinals for the third consecutive season after defeating Stetson in PKs in the quarterfinals. Four players garnered ASUN All-Conference laurels.
The fall 2021 campaign saw Bellarmine win its first-ever game in the ASUN Championship as the Knights rallied to defeat FGCU 2-1 in the quarterfinals. Bellarmine spent five weeks in the Atlantic Region rankings. Three Knights were honored with ASUN All-Conference awards.
The spring 2021 campaign marked Bellarmine's first in Division I and the ASUN Conference, and Goetz and the Knights wasted no time in making their mark. Bellarmine secured the top seed from the North Division in the ASUN Championship after going 3-1 in league play while finishing the season ranked No. 9 in the Atlantic Region by the United Soccer Coaches. The memorable inaugural season in D1 included an ASUN Coach of the Year nod for Head Coach Tim Chastonay, four All-Conference acknowledgements and an All-Region laurel (Jonas Skulstad).
Goetz has over 20 years of coaching experience across youth, high school and adult levels. Before arriving at Bellarmine, he most recently served as an assistant at Trinity (Ky.) High School, where he helped lead the program to three straight KHSAA regional titles (2013-15) and numerous national accolades, compiling an overall record of 63-8-3.
Goetz’ son, Drew, competed at Bellarmine and played a pivotal role on 2019's historic 16-1-5 squad that captured the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament title and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA II Tournament. Goetz had also previously coached Bellarmine players Greg Fischer, Tanner Stevens and Donald and Gilio Aviles.
A leukemia survivor, Goetz is passionate about mental performance and sports psychology. He has worked since 2017 with former English Premier League and Northern Ireland International player Paul McVeigh to deliver mental performance training with college, university and soccer clubs throughout the United States.
An alumnus of Brescia University, Goetz earned a bachelor’s degree in English and was a member of its soccer program (1986-89), where he received the Coach’s and 110 percent awards during his playing career.
Goetz resides in Louisville with his wife Julie. He has four kids: Jack, Emma, Drew (BU’ 2020) and Mary Claire.
