Bellarmine University Athletics

Aaron McAndrew

Aaron McAndrew, the 2018 GLVC women's indoor Coach of the Year and Midwest Region Coach of the Year, was hired by Bellarmine University in September of 2010 as the head sprints and hurdles coach and was later promoted to head coach of the women's team.

In 2018, the Knights women captured the GLVC Championships indoor title, adding to indoor championships won in 2012 and 2013. For his efforts, McAndrew was named GLVC Coach of the Year and selected Midwest Region of the Year by the USTFCCCA. Meghan Roby was chosen as the GLVC Track Athlete of the Year and six Knights went on to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Championships. In the outdoor season, Bellarmine finished third at the GLVC Championships and Yashira Rhymer-Stuart garnered first-team All-America accolades in the high jump after placing third.

In addition to the three GLVC titles, the Knights have tallied five runner-up finishes (Outdoor: 2011-13, 2016; Indoor: 2017) during McAndrew's tenure. The Knights women's indoor and outdoor teams have amassed 159 All-GLVC awards and 29 All-America accolades since his arrival.

Prior to his arrival at Bellarmine, McAndrew was part of one of the biggest turnarounds in Kentucky High School track and field history. Before McAndrew arrived at Fern Creek High School, the boys’ and girls’ teams failed to qualify a single athlete for the KHSAA State Championships in nearly a decade, and it had been over twice that long since the Tigers managed to score a single point at the state meet. The spring of 2009 was the most successful track and field season in Fern Creek history, as McAndrew, in less than three years, led the team to its first top-five placing at state when it finished fourth overall.

McAndrew’s history making team was led by the girls 4x100 meter relay, winning their second consecutive state championship and recording the then-second fastest time in Kentucky prep history at 48.7. The 4x400 meter relay finished as the state runner-up with a time of 3:59.8, marking just the 13th time in state history a girls 4x400m relay team had broken the four-minute mark. In McAndrew’s four-year tenure at Fern Creek, a total of 27 athletes were named All-State while nine athletes won state championships.

Before arriving at Fern Creek, McAndrew spent two seasons coaching the girls’ track and field program at his alma mater, Floyd Central High School, and helped them to their first IHSAA sectional championship in 16 years.

McAndrew is a former captain of the University of Louisville track and field team, where he is a two-time school record holder in the 4x400m relay and 4x200m relay. Throughout his tenure at Bellarmine, he has spoken at numerous state clinics and camps throughout the region and including in Indiana and Ohio. McAndrew is also the co-founder of the Louisville Track and Field Club, which is a youth track club for ages 6-18 in Louisville.

McAndrew received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from U of L. He resides in Louisville with his wife Pam and daughter Addison.
