Scott Wiegandt

Former Bellarmine University All-American and professional baseball player Scott Wiegandt was hired as the university's director of athletics starting with spring 2005 semester, setting in motion a tenure that has been defined by the Knights' increased success and visibility in the NCAA Division II ranks and rising to Division I status in the 2020-21 academic year.

On a day-to-day basis, Wiegandt is responsible for oversight of 23 intercollegiate teams at Bellarmine, including 58 staff and coaches and more than 550 student-athletes.

Under Wiegandt’s guidance, Bellarmine athletics teams have seen improvement across the board and in 2010-11, Bellarmine brought home the national championship in men’s basketball — the first national championship in Bellarmine’s sports history. He also has overseen the addition of four additional teams with the latest being sprint football in fall of 2022. In July 2024, Wiegandt was named to the 2024-25 executive committee of the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AAA ADA).

In Bellarmine’s first two years at the Division I level, the Knights captured a pair of ASUN Conference championships, winning the league’s academic championship in 2021 and the 2022 men’s basketball title in front of more than 6,000 fans at Freedom Hall—the second-largest crowd to witness an ASUN Championship.

Wiegandt also has helped raise awareness of Bellarmine on a national level. He spearheaded efforts that led to Bellarmine hosting 18 NCAA national championships while the Knights competed at the DII level. He served in leadership positions in multiple organizations and was national president of the Division II Athletics Directors Association in 2017-18. His efforts were recognized in 2013 when he was named Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors.

A proud native of Louisville, Wiegandt grew up in the city’s south end and starred for Holy Cross High School before bringing his talents to Bellarmine, where he not only earned an undergraduate biology degree, but he also earned All-America status as a senior pitcher for the Knights baseball team.

Wiegandt was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1989 Major League Baseball draft and played 10 years of professional baseball — eight seasons in the Phillies organization and one each in the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations. He logged Triple-A innings in six of his 10 professional seasons and recorded a 3.15 career ERA across all levels. He spent the 1997 season in his hometown playing the Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate, the Louisville Redbirds.

Following his playing days, Wiegandt turned to the broadcast booth where he served as a color analyst for FOX Sports Ohio and Insight Communications calling Louisville Bats games from 1998 to 2004. He also returned to Holy Cross to coach and teach from 1998 to 2002.

Wiegandt began his employment with Bellarmine during the 2000-01 year as the Knights head baseball coach and assistant AD. He served four seasons before assuming the role of interim director of athletics in 2004. The interim tag was removed after just nine months and he was officially named the full-time director of athletics in 2005.

Wiegandt is married to the former Danielle Atzinger, who holds two graduate degrees and a doctorate degree in education from Bellarmine. She is currently president at Holy Cross High School. The couple has three children: Caleb, Callie and Cole.
