LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University lacrosse team dropped a 13-4 decision to the visiting Bryant Bulldogs in an NCAA Div. I non-conference game today at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
The visitors controlled the tempo from the outset and outshot the Knights 40-19 for the game. The Bulldogs broke out of the gates impressively, racing to a 4-0 lead in the first 6:46. The Knights finally chalked up their first goal at the 3:49 mark of the first quarter as Sean Doyle found the back of the net off a pass from Derek Hopcroft. Bryant answered at the 1:10 mark to take a 5-1 lead after the first period.
On the first possession of the second quarter, Doyle scored again to pull Knights to within 5-2. However, the defense took over for the next 13 minutes before Bryant's Matt Larson scored with just five seconds left in the half to give the Bulldogs a 6-2 halftime lead.
Bryant scored three unanswered goals to start the third period to take a commanding 9-2 lead before Doyle again scored for the Knights to make the score after three periods 9-3 Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs put the game away by scoring four times in the final quarter's first five minutes to take a 10-goal lead at 13-3. Bellarmine's Jarrett Davis ended the game's scoring with a goal at the 3:12 mark to make the final score 13-4.
The Bulldogs improve to 3-2 on the season. Bellarmine falls to 3-3 with all three losses coming at home.
Leading scorers for the game included Doyle and Larson, who scored three goals apiece, and Travis Harrington, who had one goal and four assists for the Bulldogs.
Bryant's Jameson Love worked all 60 minutes in goal to pick up the win while collecting nine saves. Bellarmine's Scott Bowles started and played the first half and was saddled with the loss.
The Knights now travel to the University of Hartford in a game that pits Bellarmine Coach Jack McGetrick against his former team. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 13.
