BRONXVILLE, N.Y. --- Exploding for 44 points in the second half, the Bellarmine University women's basketball team came away with a 73-55 win over the Concordia College (NY) Clippers on Wednesday night behind a game high 19 points from senior
Allison Matheis.
Slow out of the gate, the Knights misfired on their first nine attempts and fell behind 10-0 early on. Bellarmine slowly chipped away at the lead, finally going ahead of the Clippers with eight minutes to go in the half when
Betsy Goodin found an open
Therese Montano down low for the layup.
Concordia finished the half strong though, going back ahead 33-29 behind hot shooting and tough defense led by forward Chanessa Blackemore, who registered five blocks in the opening period.
After battling back and forth for the opening 10 minutes of the half, Bellarmine went on an 18-4 run midway through second half to put the game out of reach of the host Clippers. The run was fueled by sophomore
Kylee Hamilton, who scored six of her 16 points during the stretch. Concordia never threatened again as the victory was topped off by a
Rachel Seaman layup with four seconds remaining to push the score to a final of 73-55.
Having another dominant performance on the backboard, Bellarmine won the rebounding battle 52-36, including pulling down 25 offensive boards, which led to a 26-4 advantage in second chance points. The Knights also forced Concordia's Krystina Agard, who had scored 20+ points in her last four games, to just 10 points on 3-10 shooting.
Matheis was dialed in all day, tying a career high with five three pointers as part of her 19 points while Hamilton dished out five assists and pulled down four boards to go along with her 16 points. Montano was the only other Knight in double figures with 11.
Bellarmine will stay in New York for the rest of the week, taking on the New York Institute of Technology on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
