Baseball drops nonconference clash, 6-3

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Designated hitter David Weinstein drove in a pair of runs, but the Bellarmine University baseball team fell to Ashland University 6-3 in a non-conference contest played on Sunday evening at Louisville St. Xavier High School.

Weinstein's double to right center, scoring Braxton Graven and Michael Morrissette, got the Knights on the board in the first inning.  The play provided the BU highlight of the evening, as Ashland starter Ajay Meyer refused to allow any Bellarmine player to record multiple hits.

The Eagles rallied in the second inning to take control of the ballgame, putting a total of four runs on the board.  Centerfielder Ryan Avery blasted a one-out triple to right center, and was driven in by Adam Murphy's single to center on the ensuing play.

Following another single and a walk to load the bases, Bellarmine starter Corey Thomas suffered a scare as Ethan Houck's line drive hit ricocheted off Thomas' body.  After a moment to compose himself, Thomas (L, 1-2) returned to the mound and accumulated two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.

The Knights failed to place a runner on base in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.  In the ninth, trailing 6-2 with one out, Sam Burke launched a fly ball towards left field.  Short of the track, Ashland left fielder Evan Melendez lost sight of the ball in the twilight sky, as it fell for a triple.  Kalvin Scheler drove Burke in with a groundout to second, while Zachary Blanchard struck out swinging to end the game.

Matt Bayes came on in relief for Bellarmine, and allowed one run off three hits while striking out six Eagles in the final 4.2 innings.

Burke and Morrissette each extended their season-long hit streaks to six games, while the two-hour, 13-minute game was tied for the shortest nine-inning game of the season for Bellarmine.

The Knights return to campus and look to add to the win column on Monday for a doubleheader against the Eagles.  First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Knights Field.
