Bellarmine sweeps Panthers to salvage weekend split

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The sun came out for Sunday's Bellarmine baseball doubleheader, and so did the Knights, as they topped the Drury Panthers 9-5 and 6-5. The Knights dropped Saturday's doubleheader to the Missouri S&T Miners on Saturday afternoon, 6-4 and 4-2.

Following the weekend series, the Knights are 9-10 on the season. The Knights advance to 3-2 in the GLVC.

SATURDAY'S RECAPS:

Game 1:  Missouri S&T 6, BU 4

The Miners and the Knights matched each other run for run through eight innings and went into the ninth tied 4-4.  S&T plated two runs in the top of the ninght and held the Knights scoreless to hang on for the 6-4 win. The game was plagued with poor defense, as the teams combined for seven errors during the game. Miners reliever Nolan Korn earned his first win of the day, while the loss was charged to Bellarmine reliever Aaron Deatherage.

Game 2: Missouri S&T 4, BU 2

The Knights started strong in game two as senior designated hitter David Weinstein doubled to drive in Cory Johnson and Braxton Graven for an early 2-0 lead. Freshman pitcher Ben Fuchs, meanwhile, was kept the Miners offstride and scoreless threw six innings. The visitors finally broke through and scored two in the seventh to force extra innings. After a scoreless eighth inning, the Miners scored two in the ninth to secure the win. Missouri S&T reliever Korn received his second win of the day, as he threw three scoreless innings, giving up only two hits. Bellarmine reliever Matt Bayes was charged with the loss, as he gave up two runs and three hits.

SUNDAY'S RECAPS:

Game 1: BU 9, DU 5

A huge eighth inning launched the Knighs to a win over the Drury Panthers in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. Bellarmine went into the eighth down 4-2. After putting the first three Bellarmine batters on base, Mike Morissette singled to drive in the first run of the inning. Graven doubled down the left field line to drive in two more runs. Weinstein followed it up with a single down the right field line to drive in Morissette.  Kal Scheler then hit a one-out triple down the right field line to drive in two more runs for the Knights. A successful squeeze bunt by Kyle Roden scored Scheler for the final run of the game.

Bellarmine reliever Caleb Shelley earned his first win of his career, as he gave up two runs on five hits. Phil Forbis finished up the game for the Knights by throwing an inning of hitless, scoreless relief. The loss was charged to Panthers reliever Kevin Sweeney, his third of the season. Sweeney came in to start the eighth, and gave up four runs on three hits before being replaced with no outs recorded. Weinstein and Scheler both recorded two hits and drove in two runs in the win.

Game 2: BU 6, DU 5

The Knights posted three runs in the first inning and one each in the second and third, while holding the Panthers scoreless through the fourth.  In the top of the sixth, a solo homer by R. J. Knese cut Bellarmine's lead to 5-3. The Knights added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, as Graven doubled down the left field line to plate Johnson.

That insurance run proved to be the game-winner as Drury mounted a serious threat to Bellarmine in the seventh, cutting the lead to 6-5. The game ended as Graven made a diving catch in center with two runners on base.

Bellarmine starting pitcher Jason Sterrett earned the win and advanced to 2-1 on the season. He went 6.1 innings, giving up five runs on nine hits. Forbis got the save in his second relief appearance of the day, giving up just one hit and no runs. Drury starting pitcher Tyler Abma took the loss, and fell to 0-1 on the season. Johnson, Morrissette, Graven and Roden each had two hits in the game.

The Knights will be back in action on Wednesday to face University of Missouri-St. Louis. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Knights Field.
