LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- After going a perfect 3-0 in the preseason, including a 2-1 win over Div.-I Murray State University, the Bellarmine University women's soccer field will look for some revenge in the regular season opener as they travel to Tiffin University to battle the Dragons. After Friday's games, the Knights will also take travel to the University of Findlay on Sunday for a game against the Oilers.
Last year, Tiffin came into Owsley B. Frazier stadium and handed Bellarmine a 3-0 loss. The three goals were the most the Knights have given up in their past two season.
Bellarmine returns a core group of defenders from last season including Great Lakes Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year
Abby Schuhmann and goalkeeper
Amy Kunowski. The Knights also have
Brianna Simmons,
Adrianna Long and
Danielle Kamenec back from a year ago.
Coach Jonathan Velotta also hopes that some of his young players make an impact early on. If their performance in the exhibition season is a sign of things to come than he has a group of budding stars as freshmen
McKenzie Combs,
Abby Janszen,
Maura Gorman, and
Emily Hollander all found the back of the net in the exhibition season.
The Dragons are a talented team that returns nine starters, including leading scorer and all-region performer Shelly Rogers, from last year's team that made the Great Lakes Intercollegiate championship game and advanced to the NCAA tournament. The team also has an added bonus of experience as they traveled to Brazil in early August for several preseason games.
The Knights and Findlay have split the previous six meetings with each team winning three times.
Bellarmine and Tiffin will square off at 2:00 PM at Tiffin's Paradiso Field.
