LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The No. 11 Bellarmine University Knights saw their nation's leading 29-game home winning streak snapped as the No. 21 Indianapolis Greyhounds scored the game's last five points to pull out a 64-62 upset victory in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest in Knights Hall on Thursday night.
After scoring just 18 first half points and trailing by six at halftime, the Knights made a strong comeback in the second period and overtook Indianapolis with just under five minutes to play. Bellarmine appeared to have escaped with the victory as they led 61-56 with just 32 seconds remaining.
However, UIndy's Reece Cheatham drew a foul while shooting a three with 21 seconds left and connected on all three charity tosses to bring the Hounds to within two. Bellarmine's Chris Dowe was fouled on the ensuing possession, but made just one of two free throws to keep it a one possession game.
UIndy opted to take an uncontested layup to trim the lead to 62-61 with 13 ticks left on the clock. Bellmarmine then failed to get the ball inbounded cleanly and the ball went back to the Hounds.
The Knights' Keisten Jones was then whistled for a blocking foul with 9.7 seconds showing on the clock, and Tyrae Robinson knocked down both free throws to put the Greyhounds up 63-62.
Bellarmine still had a chance to answer, but Dowe's cross-court pass was picked off by UIndy's James Hollowell, and Bellarmine gave one last foul. Hollowell made the first free throw, but missed the second and all Bellarmine could manage was a desperation heave from three-quarters of the length of the court.
“We showed tremendous courage and fought back to a five point lead with 21 seconds to go and didn't finish the game,” said Bellarmine Coach Scott Davenport. “The same great poise we played with on the road in Indianapolis to beat a great team, we didn't play with that poise tonight, and the outcome was absolutely reversed.”
Davenport added, “It's a devastating loss when you look at postseason ramifications. It comes down to poise and execution, and they did it a lot better than we did.”
Hollowell led all scorers with 19 for the Greyhounds with Leland Brown adding 15 for the winners.
Bellarmine was paced by Vance Hall with 15 and Dowe dropped in 14—all in the second half.
Both teams now stand at 16-4, 8-4 in the GLVC, which is tied for third in the East Division. Wisconsin-Parkside took the outright lead in the division with a 75-70 road win at Kentucky Wesleyan coupled with a 63-59 home loss by Southern Indiana to Lewis.
The Knights return to action Saturday afternoon with a 3:15 p.m. contest at home against St. Joseph's.
