Box Score ABILENE, Texas—The Bellarmine University baseball team surrendered eight runs in the bottom of the first to Tarleton State and never recovered, falling by the final score of 10-7 in a game played Sunday evening at Crutcher Scott Field on the campus of Abilene Christian University.
Despite starting in a hole, the Knights tried to dig themselves out of it, and climbed back to tighten the score to 8-7, but the comeback stalled at that point and the Texans tacked on two more runs to close out the game.
“Overall, I thought we did a phenomenal job of clawing our way back in the game,” said Bellarmine Coach Matt Tyner, “but we just couldn't push it over the edge. We had a base running mistake that took us out of a potentially big inning, but I thought our bull pen did a pretty good job for us tonight.”
Benjamin Fuchs provided four solid innings of relief work giving up one earned run and just three hits. Kevin Herrin saw his first pitching action of the year, coming on to strike out the side in the fifth before being lifted in the sixth after issuing a leadoff walk.
Offensively, the Knights were led by
Graham Spencer and
Justin Eberenz, who combined to go 4-for-7 with five runs batted in and two runs scored. Phil Leopold also had a solid night with a double and a pair of singles.
Tarleton State won its fourth in a row as the Texans improved to 10-6-1 on the year. Bellarmine falls to 3-2 on the season.
The Knights continue their Texas spring break trip with a single 9-inning game tomorrow at Angelo State in San Angelo. The Rams are 10-5 on the season and are ranked No. 16 by College Baseball Lineup and No. 30 in the Collegiate Baseball poll.
