Box Score 2 LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University baseball team split its second consecutive doubleheader with the St. Joseph's Pumas in Great Lakes Valley Conference action today at Gil Hodges Field. In game one, the Knights pulled out a 1-0 decision, but surrendered three unearned runs in the second game and fell 4-2.
The Knights and the Pumas, who started the weekend virtually tied for second in the GLVC East, stayed in the same place by splitting doubleheaders both today and yesterday. Bellarmine owns a small advantage in percentage points with a league record of 13-7 (.650) compared to St. Joseph's 14-8 (.636) mark. Lewis sits atop the East Division with a 15-3 record.
In game one of today's twin bill, Bellarmine got an outstanding effort from starting pitcher
Jason Sterrett, who went six and a third innings without surrendering a run while giving up just three hits. Closer
Justin Strohmeier pitched the final two-thirds of the seventh inning to nail down his fifth save of the season.
The lone run of the game came in the third inning when
Jes Staples and
Austin Crutcher both reached on Puma errors, then pulled off a double steal. Designated hitter
Andy Gehr then got a grounder to the right side of the infield to drive in Staples.
Game two, a 9-inning contest, started as another pitchers' duel as BU's
Benjamin Fuchs and St. Joe's Jake Harper each had shutouts over the first four innings. The Knights finally broke through for a pair of runs in the top of the fifth when Staples singled home Mike Morissette and
Justin Eberenz.
The Pumas did all of their damage in the sixth inning when a pair of costly Bellarmine errors led to a 4-run inning for the home team.
Bellarmine outhit the Pumas 8-6 in the second game as Morrissette and
Nick Hladek each posted two-hit games.
The Knights move to 18-13 overall this season and will be back in action on Wednesday with a midweek doubleheader at McKendree.
