Bellarmine drops doubleheader to league-leading Flyers

4/6/2013 9:02:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Lewis University on Saturday afternoon, falling 11-1 in game one and 5-3 in the nightcap in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Knights Field.

In the opener, the visiting Flyers broke open a tight game with four runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings to win going away as the Knights committed five errors in the game to help fuel the Lewis rally.

Bellarmine was limited to just five hits in the game as Lewis pitcher Tom Helwich tossed a complete game.    The Knights' lone run came in the third inning Justin Eberenz, who was aboard thanks to a Lewis error, scampered home on a Mike Morrissette single.

In game two—a seven-inning affair—the lead traded hands several times before the Flyers again pulled away late to scratch out the 5-3 win.

Bellarmine grabbed an early lead as Morrissette led off the bottom of the first inning with a double down the left field line, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jes Staples, and scored on a wild pitch.

The Flyers tied it in the top of the second, connecting on three singles to plate the tying run.  The Knights again surged ahead with a run in the home half of the inning as Ryan Pierce reached on a two-out error, then advanced to third on an Eberenz single.  A balk allowed both runners to advance and Bellarmine took a 2-1 lead.

Lewis started the third inning with back-to-back extra base hits to tie the game and took lead with a sacrifice fly.  In the bottom half, Staples led off with a single as his grounder took a bad hop and handcuffed the Lewis second baseman. The freshman lefty then came around to score later in the frame on a Lewis error to knot the game at 3-3.

The Flyers struck again in the fifth inning, plating a run on three hits.  The Knights tried to answer in the bottom of the sixth, but pinch runner Alec Bahnick was cut down at the plate when he tried to score on Nick Hladek's single to shallow center field.

Lewis added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, and Flyer pitcher Matt Frahm retired the Knights in order to record the second complete game for Lewis pitching staff on the day.

Bellarmine falls to 14-11 on the season and 9-5 in the GLVC, while Lewis extends its lead in the GLVC East with a league mark of 12-1 and an overall record of 18-3.

The same two teams will square off for another doubleheader tomorrow at Knights Field at noon.
