Box Score EVANSVILLE, Ind.—After spotting Lewis four runs in the top of the first inning, the Bellarmine Knights roared back for an 8-4 victory in the second round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship tournament at the University of Southern Indiana baseball field. The game was originally scheduled to begin Friday at noon, but rained delayed its start to 11:14 p.m. (EDT) and didn't end until almost 2 a.m.
The second-seeded Flyers (30-15) greeted Bellarmine starting pitcher
Jason Sterrett harshly, banging out five first inning hits and plating four runs.
The Knights (27-21) battled back with single runs in the first two innings then pushed across four runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good.
Austin Crutcher delivered the big blow with a two-run homer and
Cody Scheler drove in the eventual game-winning run with a triple as Bellarmine took a 6-4 lead. The Knights tacked on runs in the fourth and sixth innings to extend their cushion to 8-4.
Meanwhile, Sterrett settled down and put together a solid outing by allowing just one more hit and striking out eight batters in six full innings of work. The Bellarmine bullpen did not give up hit over the final three innings as
Evan McNair,
Ryan Dixon, and
Justin Strohmeier each pitched an inning to close out the game.
Crutcher finished the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and second baseman
Graham Spencer also went 3-for-4 and drove in two. The Knights, who came in as the tourney's No. 6 seed, banged out 14 hits and played error-free in the field.
Bellarmine now advances to meet the winner of the Missouri-St. Louis and Lewis game in the finals of the “USI” side of the bracket at 5 p.m. CDT (6 p.m. EDT). This game was originally scheduled to be played at Bosse Field, but due to the rain delay, has been moved to the USI baseball field.
