Box Score 2 LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader against Great Lakes Valley Conference rival University of Southern Indiana on Friday at Knights Field, winning Game One 8-7 in 10 innings, and Game Two 7-4.
Recaps of the games are below.
Game One: Bellarmine 8, Southern Indiana 7 (F/10 innings)
Shortstop
Justin Eberenz hit a walk-off single to the shortstop with two outs in the bottom of the tenth inning to drive in third baseman
Cole Metcalfe and break a 7-7 deadlock in the opener.
Eberenz recorded three runs batted in off his 2-for-3 performance at the plate, as the Knights saw a 7-4 sixth inning lead evaporate. Centerfielder
Austin Crutcher recorded three hits in five at-bats to pace the home side, which accumulated 12 hits for the contest.
Starting pitcher
Kyle Grana struck out four Screaming Eagles batters and allowed three earned runs in 5.2 innings.
Curtis McCombs (W, 4-2) picked up the victory after pitching a hit-free 10th inning.
Game Two: Bellarmine 7, Southern Indiana 4
Back-to-back three-run innings in the third and fourth frames sent the Knights (25-20, 20-12 GLVC) out to a 6-2 lead, as USI (29-18, 18-16 GLVC) could not complete the comeback in the seven-inning game.
Kevin Herren's (W, 1-0) two-on, two-out strikeout of USI catcher Ryan Bertram in the top of the fifth inning quieted the Screaming Eagle's closest charge, while
Justin Strohmeier collected his seventh save of his senior campaign.
Offensively, the Knights racked up 13 hits, led by a 3-for-3 outing by designated hitter
Cody Scheler, who also scored twice. First baseman
Michael Morrissette drove in three runs off 3-for-4 hitting, as Bellarmine had four multi-hit batters.
The two teams will continue the four-game series on Saturday. With rain expected in the forecast for the Louisville area, first pitch has been moved to 11 a.m. at Knights Field. For the latest schedule, please check the official Bellarmine University Athletics website at BUKnights.com.
