DETROIT, Mich. — The Bellarmine University women's basketball team had its five-game winning streak snapped Friday as the Knights fell 69-53 to Northwood in the Wayne State Holiday Classic.
Sophomore guard
Destony Curry had 11 points to lead Bellarmine (5-2), which hadn't lost since its season debut against North Alabama. Northwood (6-3) won for the fourth time in its last five games and collected its third victory over a Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent this season after also knocking off St. Joseph's and Indianapolis.
Bellarmine trailed 33-21 at halftime as the Knights only shot 20 percent from the floor in the first half. BU stayed as close as it did by knocking down 8-of-9 free throws (88.9 percent), with Curry sinking all five of her attempts from the charity stripe in tallying nine points before the intermission.
With 8:31 left before the break, Curry's three-point play tied the game at 15. However, Bellarmine went into a funk, as the Knights went over five minutes without scoring. BU was down 12 before Curry stopped the drought with a pair of free throws, but the Knights still went nearly seven minutes without a field goal before a basket by senior forward
Morgan Clemons at the 1:44 mark.
Lauren Robak matched Curry with nine first-half points, including a 3-pointer that gave Northwood its biggest lead before halftime at 14. The Timberwolves, a Midwest Region colleague of the Knights, took a 12-point advantage into the intermission and never looked back.
Robak racked up a game-high 21 points, Gabrielle Rivette added 13 and Aleigha Wylie had 10 for Northwood, which held Bellarmine to 32.7 percent shooting. The Timberwolves shot 42.4 percent and owned a 44-32 rebounding advantage.
Curry was the only Bellarmine player to score in double figures. Sophomore guard
Kelsey Adwell chipped in nine points while junior center
Jennifer Smith had seven.
Bellarmine will meet tournament host Wayne State at 4 p.m. (ET) on Saturday. The Warriors are ranked 11th in the country. The game will be broadcast live on WFIA 94.7 FM. Links to live stats and video are available on BU's athletics website.
