Box Score 2 LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In its season opening doubleheader Saturday at Knights Field, solid pitching wasn't in short supply for the Bellarmine University baseball team but offense ultimately was as the Knights were swept 3-2 and 5-2 by Alderson Broaddus.
Larry Owens made his debut as head coach for Bellarmine (0-2), and the Knights welcomed him offensively with two runs in their first inning of the season. Unfortunately, Bellarmine mostly struggled after that initial frame at the plate, as the Knights were shut out over the final six innings of the first game and only mustered a run apiece in the fourth and fifth innings of the second contest against the Battlers (3-2).
Curtis McCombs and
Evan McNair both notched respectable starts on the mound for Bellarmine. McCombs started the first game and allowed three runs, including two earned, on four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings pitched. The senior right-hander took a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning before the Battlers scored twice to take the lead.
Bellarmine nearly tied the game in the seventh and final inning of Game 1 when
Andrew Bryant ripped a double off the fence in left field with two outs. The Knights'
Ben Carson, pinch running for
Nick Wright, who had singled, lost his footing while racing for home and was tagged out by catcher Daniel Essian after the relay throw to secure the second save of the season for Battlers pitcher Zach Glaze.
Bellarmine actually outhit Alderson Broaddus 6-4 in the first game. Wright went 2 for 3 and Bryant,
Austin Crutcher,
Cody Scheler and
Jes Staples added one hit apiece.
The Knights scored both of their runs in the first inning of Game 1. Crutcher singled to lead off and Scheler followed with a double.
Cole Metcalfe collected an RBI with a groundout, and Bellarmine added a second run when Staples' fly ball was dropped in the outfield.
After the rocky first inning, Randy Dobnak (2-0) settled down for the Battlers. The freshman right-hander didn't allow the Knights another run over the next five innings, and Glaze relieved him with one out in the seventh to preserve the win despite the dramatic finish. Dobnak allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk with six strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched.
Alderson Broaddus' Jeff Conley menaced Bellarmine both on the mound and at the plate in the second game. His two-run homer highlighted a four-run fifth inning for the Battlers, who broke open a 1-1 game. Conley also tripled and moved his record to 1-1 after giving up two earned runs on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts in five innings.
Although Bellarmine only registered two hits in the second game, the Knights did manage to bring the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning after
Cole Metcalfe reached on an error and
Michael Belliveau walked. Chris Boatto was able to quash the rally and earned the save after pitching two scoreless innings.
Scheler and Staples had one hit apiece for Bellarmine. Scheler led off the fourth with a double down the right field line and scored on Staples' two-out single.
Andy Gehr knocked in the Knights' second and final run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning.
McNair pitched a complete game for Bellarmine. Aside from the four-run fifth inning, he allowed a single run. The sophomore right-hander struck out two while allowing five earned runs on seven hits and one walk in seven innings.
Bellarmine's scheduled doubleheader on Sunday has been canceled due to weather.
