Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—The No. 3 Indianapolis Greyhounds outlasted the No. 2/4 Bellarmine Knights 66-62 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game tonight in Nicoson Hall. The game was as close as fans might imagine a top 5 game would be, and Bellarmine's
Chris Whitehead had an opportunity to tie the game in the waning seconds. However, the BU point guard's 3-pointer bounced high off the back iron, and UIndy's Joe Lawson claimed the rebound then made one of two ensuing free throws to make the final margin four.
Bellarmine, ranked No. 2 in the media poll and No. 4 in the coaches poll, fell victim to second chance points particularly in the final period as the Greyhounds turned around a rebounding deficit at halftime into a +4 rebounding margin for the game. Particularly disheartening for Knights fans is the fact that six of UIndy's second chance points came after the Hounds initially launched air balls on 3-point attempts.
"We got beat from a fundamental standpoint," said Bellarmine Head Coach
Scott Davenport. "We're up 56-54, and we blow four opportunities. They shoot an air ball three and get an offensive rebound and hit a three and we turn it over twice."
The 10
th year coach added, "(UIndy is) a great team. They played well, and they outrebounded and they out-toughed us the last five minutes of the game, but they shoot 87.5 percent from the (free throw) line and we shoot 61.1 You can't win shooting 61 percent from the free throw line against a team that's 14-0 and playing home."
The Knights were led by
Jake Thelen and
Rusty Troutman who scored 19 and 18 points respectively. Thelen collected his seventh double-double of the season with 11 rebounds, and he eclipsed the 1,000 point mark for his Bellarmine career on a layup in the first half. Troutman's 18 points match his career high.
The Greyhounds were paced by Lawson, who also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds as four Indianapolis players reached double figures.
The Knights outshot their hosts 45.1 to 39.6 percent, but UIndy held the edge in rebounding 35-31 and outscored Bellarmine 30-15 from beyond the arc, making 10 of 27 triples compared to five of 13 for BU.
The Greyhounds remained undefeated on the season, moving to 14-0, 6-0 GLVC. The Knights drop a game for the second time this season, falling to 12-2 overall and 4-1 in league play.
The Knights return to action Saturday afternoon in a league game at St. Joseph's.
